Obama supporter story

Someone from the Obama campaigned heard what we were doing and put a post on the Obama campaign blog as well.

Headed to Iowa

Am leaving to Iowa to do some real-world testing. With the caucus excitement in full swing, there are a lot of stories that we can help people capture and share.

Weather looks really cold -- will be a major shift from California.

We also announced a partnership with IowaPolitics.com, and are getting some nice press from that as well.

Who we are...

After being at this for months, it's great seeing our site up. We decided against a private beta, figuring it would be best / easiest to just lift the covers. (My seven-year old son keeps asking about when our "launch party" is. I had to explain to him what a BETA site meant, and now he is using the word BETA for everything.)

Besides me, our team is made up of Matt, Jared, Ryan and Colin. Matt, Jared and I worked together at Ofoto (Kodak Gallery), down the block from our offices here in Berkeley, and together we co-founded earfl in the summer, 2007. Matt leads the engineering efforts, alongside Ryan and Colin. Jared heads up our product work, which consists of keeping the team tight with agile development.

We got some great plans over the next couple of weeks to test our site, and start collecting stories. All I can tell you now is that I need to go to REI this weekend and get some warm clothes.

Campaign stories

Looking at our tag cloud, you can probably see how we are testing the site out. Looks like "Biden", "campaign", "president" stories are coming in.

All the excitement about primaries/caucuses coming up in early January pushed us to get the preview site out and explore how the site will be used. The Biden campaign had a nice post on their blog earlier today encouraging campaign supporters to use our site to get their personal stories of support out.

The idea of leveraging the supporter's own voice to influence others lines up nicely with our ideas behind earfl.

Here's we are!

As you can tell, we are open to the public! We hope you like the preview site.

Our goal behind earfl is to capture those memories and stories that are missed with more typical video, photo, or text-based media. Everyday we tell our stories to other people by talking -- it's easy to do and easy for our friends and families to understand. By telling our stories out loud, we also pass along the emotion, intonations, nuances, etc. that add authenticity to the spoken message.

We are using a bunch of technology that makes recording, storing and sharing your memories as easy as making a phone call. We understand the more valuable stories may be those from people like parents or children that may not be as comfortable with technology as you are. We want to make it simple for them too, eliminating the need for them to register to contribute.

We definitely want to hear from you! Let us know how we can improve earfl,as well as how you are using our service. We have some great things coming over the next couple of months!

Groups

With today's release, we have added groups. We did this to enable several types of users:
  • Personal events like weddings and high school reunions.
  • Public events like the upcoming elections
  • Topic driven groups
Please give it a try and let us know what you think.
